Kylie Minogue’s Red Mini Dress and Platform Sneakers on her “Got to Be Certain”Single Cover

On May 2, 1988, Kyle Minogue released the single “Got to Be Certain” from her debut studio album Kylie. The pop song was an instant hit, along with the outfit she wore on the single’s cover.

The then 20 year old donned a tight red mini dress with short sleeves and a mock neck, along with black knee high socks, black elbow-length gloves, and a pair of black platform sneakers.

Not only is this outfit easy to recreate in 2019, but it incorporates many big fashion trends today, such as the return of platform footwear, knee high socks, and the mock neck neckline that is so often seen in dresses and tops.

Kylie Minogue’s High Waisted Mom Jeans and Lace Bustier in The Delinquents

1989’s The Delinquents is an Australian movie that marked Kylie Minogue’s first ever film role. She was the leading lady, playing the role of Lola Lovell, a teenager who falls in love with an unruly older man.

Playing the role of the good girl turned rebel, Minogue’s most famous outfit consisted of a pair of high waisted mom jeans with a lace bustier and a black leather jacket.

The look was accessorized with gold hoop earrings, a black belt with gold detailing, and a red lip. In terms of denim, mom jeans that were once popular in the 80s and 90s have exploded.

The combination of the jeans with a classic leather jacket and a sexy bustier makes this a Kylie outfit that truly stands the test of time.

Kylie Minogue’s Sequin Mini Dress and Strappy Sandals from the Australian Premiere of The Delinquents

Later in 1989 came the red carpet premiere of The Delinquents. The A-list event took place in Minogue’s native Australia and to the premiere she sported a whole new look that people would remember forever.

First, she debuted a new, much shorter haircut. But beyond her hair, she wowed in a sequin mini dress and strappy sandals. The mini dress had a whimsical “XO” motif on it and spaghetti straps.

While we’re not sure mini dresses ever went out of style, we can definitely say that spaghetti straps and strappy sandals did.

However, both of those have made a comeback, with cami dresses similar to the silhouette and neckline of Kylie’s being worn by some of the biggest celebs today.

Kylie Minogue’s Oversized Sweatshirt and Wide-Legged Jeans

Fashion is partly about being comfortable and Kylie Minogue’s sweater and jeans look from 1988 certainly screams cozy. The casual ensemble was the epitome of 80s fashion, combining high waisted, wide-legged denim pants with an oversized blush pink sweater tucked in at the waist.

First, let’s discuss Kylie’s jeans. Both the waistline and silhouette of the jeans speak to two trends that are back in at the moment: high waisted jeans and wide-legged pants as a whole.

Second, oversized sweaters are also making a comeback with trendsetters opting for loose, baggy, and comfortable sweatshirts over form-fitting cropped ones.

Kylie Minogue’s Leopard Print Babydoll Dress

Animal print was all over the runway at the Big Four Fashion Weeks in 2019, but this wasn’t the first time that animal print has been on-trend.

In fact, Kylie Minogue donned a leopard print babydoll dress in 1989. She kept the look simple, accessorizing only with a bracelet, lace up chunky heels, and Shirley Temple-esque curls.

Leopard is one animal print that is particularly in right now, and Kylie knocked this statement pattern out of the park.

Chunky heels have also seen a resurgence, which means that in essence, this outfit from exactly 30 years ago could just as easily be seen on the streets today.
