Tom Cruise was one of the biggest stars of the 80s. In addition to his hit movies and million dollar smile, he was always on point when it came to fashion. Below, we’ve come up with a list of Tom Cruise outfits from the 1980s that we still love today.

#1 Faux Fur-Trimmed Leather Jacket and Aviators in Top Gun

The outfits in the 1986 hit Top Gun inspired a generation of men. Although Maverick’s army green utilitarian jumpsuit has definitely made a comeback (even in women’s fashion), it’s his faux-fur trimmed leather jacket and aviators look that we are still obsessed with today.

Aviator sunglasses have definitely stood the test of time, not to mention his white t-shirt and blue bootcut jeans combination.

Top it off with a black, bomber-style leather jacket (patches optional) complete with faux fur trim and you’ve got the ultimate Tom Cruise look. This leather jacket and aviator duo is not only cool, it’s practical. The jacket’s lined interior makes it perfect for fall or winter.

#2 Grey Blazer and Wayfarer Sunglasses in Risky Business

Everyone knows Risky Business (particularly the one scene where Tom Cruise’s character is dancing around in his underwear). For those that can remember beyond that iconic scene, you’ll realize that Joel Goodsen actually had some great ensembles other than the white button up and briefs.

Our favourite look from the 1983 film has to be the grey wool blazer he sports at the beginning. Paired with a sleek black t-shirt, blue jeans, and of course, his character’s signature black wayfarer sunglasses – there is really nothing as casually cool as this outfit. And lucky for you, it’s extremely easy to replicate.

Wayfarer sunglasses are one of the trendiest styles for men in 2019, not to mention grey blazers and jackets for men.

#3 All Denim Look in The Outsiders

The Outsiders was one of Tom Cruise’s first films, but it was known for more than the ensemble cast. This hit movie, based on the book of the same name, cast Tom Cruise in the role of Steve Randle.

For most of the film, Steve wears an all-denim outfit that is essentially an edgy take on the Canadian tuxedo.

Blue bootcut jeans cuffed at the bottom, a denim vest, and a grey sleeveless top are all you really need to complete the look. Cuffed jeans are so in right now, especially when paired with a black leather shoe or boot, as seen in the movie.

In addition, denim on denim is another trend that’s made its way back into the mainstream in 2019, in both men and women’s fashion.

If you’re hesitant to go sleeveless, consider a less revealing iteration of the look by pairing your jeans with a long-sleeved denim jacket, or a long-sleeved grey shirt worn beneath the denim vest.

#4 Short Sleeved Hawaiian Shirts in Cocktails

Cocktails featured one of the most beloved 80s trends: Hawaiian shirts. But even back in 1988 when the movie was released, Tom Cruise’s style was ahead of the game.

Rather than the palm tree prints of the era, Cruise rocked multiple short-sleeved shirts with traditionally feminine prints such as florals and fresh fruit.

To complete such a classic beachy look, his character rolled up the sleeves so they were cuffed, undid the top couple of buttons, added a pair of black wayfarer sunglasses, and finished it off with white pants and boat shoes.

Not only are short-sleeved button up shirts having a major moment right now, but bold, brightly-coloured prints are too, making Tom Cruise’s Cocktails outfit one 80s look we still love today.
