#5 Whitney Houston’s Sequin Cami Dress at the 30th Annual Grammy Awards
On March 22, 1988, Whitney Houson attended the 30th Annual Grammy Awards at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. She arrived at the awards show in one of our favourite outfits from the decade: a sequin cami dress with matching strappy sandals.
The knee-length dress had a sweetheart neckline with thin spaghetti straps and a fitted, sheath silhouette. The black dress was embellished with a black floral pattern outlined in sequins and sparkly silver jewels.
She finished off the look with a simple cross necklace, bracelet, drop earrings, and of course, her signature curls.
Not only are sequins back, but cami style dresses that were popular in the 1980s and 1990s, like the one Houston wore to the 1988 Grammys, are majorly trending right now.

#4 Whitney Houston’s Cropped Blazer and Colour Block Skirt at the 15th Annual American Music Awards
Earlier in 1988, while attending the 15th Annual American Music Awards, Whitney Houston donned yet another iconic 80s look. This time she opted for lots of colour, which was quite unlike the singer in the era.
She wore a striped colour block pencil skirt that included shades of royal blue, crimson red, forest green, and canary yellow, as well as a cropped red blazer.
The blazer was menswear-inspired, it was double breasted and featured wide lapels and of course, shoulder pads. The sleek, bold ensemble is essentially like an 80s power suit and Houston totally rocked the look.
To recreate the outfit today, you’ll need a vibrant, colour block knee-length skirt and a matching monochrome cropped blazer.
#3 Whitney Houston’s Blouse Floor Length Gown
Channeling her inner Disney princess, Whitney Houston walked onstage wearing a sparkly blue floor-length evening gown at a concert in 1986. The “I Will Always Love You” singer wowed the audience in this shimmering ensemble that made her look like royalty.
From the sapphire blue hue to the blouse on silhouette, there really isn’t much we don’t love about it. We also can’t get over the front split, tulip-esque hemline that added just a hint of sexiness to this statement gown.
Letting the dress speak for itself, Houston paired it with minimal accessories in the form of two silver bracelets and silver Cinderella heels.
#2 Whitney Houston’s Bodycon Dress and Silver Heels in the “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” Music Video
There’s no denying that “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” is one of the most famous Whitney Houston songs of all time. For those that don’t remember, in the music video for this hit single, Houston donned one of her best outfits of the 80s.
Throughout the music video, she is seen dancing in a ballet pink bodycon mini dress and silver heels. The simplicity of the look is what we love best, and what has allowed it to stand the test of time.
Monochromatic bodycon dresses are back in, not to mention statement earrings, which Houston also wore. When it comes to jewellery, bigger is definitely better on Whitney, who paired long, chandelier earrings with her chic mini dress.
#1 Whitney Houston’s White Pantsuit in New York
If there’s one thing Whitney Houston’s many 80s fashion looks taught us, it’s that blazers are always in style. Whitney Houston sported many blazers and pantsuits throughout the 1980s, but none have stuck in our minds more than the black and white ensemble she wore in August 1987 while performing at Jones Beach in New York.
For this special performance, the American singer wore a classy white pantsuit consisting of a cropped blazer with shoulder pads and a form-fitting white pencil skirt.
She left the blazer open in the front, showing off the black sequin cami she had on underneath. There are so many aspects of this outfit that we still love, from the monochrome pantsuit to the sequin embellishments.
